Patterns And Sequences Worksheet

As a parent of two young kids, I can’t stress enough how important it is to help them develop their critical thinking skills in their early years. With that in mind, I make sure to provide my children with appropriate learning materials. To this end, free pattern and sequence worksheets are great tools for developing these skills. They are especially helpful for Common Core requirements as they apply to both math and language arts topics.

Pattern and sequence worksheets challenge my kids to think logically about patterns and sequences while following the rules of a certain system. This encourages them to practice problem solving which helps sharpen their analytical capabilities. Plus, my children have fun practicing these tasks while solving puzzles, unscrambling words or figuring out an arithmetic series. Through this playful approach they learn more quickly, retain information better and become more engaged in the lesson plans at school.

About Patterns And Sequences Worksheets

Pattern and number sequence worksheets are an important part of a preschool, kindergarten or first grade student’s learning. These free worksheets can help students develop their understanding of sequences of numbers, geometric sequences and more.

Sequence of numbers worksheets in particular are great for teaching children how to count from one to ten, as well as identifying different shapes and colors. Geometric sequences worksheets provide children with practice in recognizing patterns in 2-D shapes such as circles, triangles or rectangles. These activities can help young learners to understand spatial relationships better. Whatever level your student is at — prekindergarten up through first grade — you’ll find activities that build on their existing knowledge base while providing challenges appropriate for their age group.

Using themes helps students stay engaged in the learning process and makes the worksheets more enjoyable. For example, if you’re teaching a math lesson on patterns, use themed worksheets such as a sequence of baseballs, hearts or flowers. Or if you’re teaching spelling, use an animal theme with pictures of cats, dogs or birds. Kids are more likely to pay attention when they can easily recognize and identify the items depicted in the picture sequence worksheet.

Another way to spruce up your lesson plans with themed picture sequences is by providing additional context for each image. This could involve researching some trivia about each item so that children can learn something new along with their math or spelling lessons.

Using Pattern Worksheets to Introduce New Subjects

At Goose Goose Duck we are all about teaching American history to young children in a way that is interactive in everyday core learning. Combining math and social studies is a great way to get students engaged with the material. Picture pattern sequences can be a great way to make lessons plans more fun and relatable for kids By introducing notable figures in American history using picture pattern sequences worksheets, we can bring these subjects alive by making them more relatable and relevant.

For example, we introduce children to Pulitzer Prize winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks. We have a series of lessons that tell children about her life and poetry with a series of short activities. One of the activities is teaching about rhythm with syllables and rhyme schemes with patterns. We start with a basic pattern worksheet using picture patterns related to her work. The images include a typewriter, a picture of her on a U.S. stamp, the cover of her award winning book, and the Pulitzer Prize. Not only is the worksheet a theme, but it also allows you to talk about what each picture represents to help them learn more about her story.

FREE Gwendolyn Brooks Pattern Sequence And Rhyming Lesson Plans

About The FREE ACTIVITY

Gwendolyn Brooks won many awards for her poetry. Along with rhythm and rhyme, her award winning poetry used rhyme schemes. A rhyme scheme is the lines in a piece of poetry that rhyme by using words at the end of each line that sound similar. Every line does not have to rhyme. The rhyming words at the end of each line create a pattern. The sequence worksheet shows what it means to make a pattern. The included parent led instructions will help you teach your children what every picture is before they complete each pattern.

Poetry also has patterns. The pattern of rhyming words in a poem is called the rhyme scheme. In, part two of the activity, children will use ‘I’m A Little Teapot’ and other simple poems to use rhyming words to create a pattern.

Both downloadable activities are complete with easy to understand parent instructions that allow you to adapt the lesson for preschoolers to 2nd grade.
