Curriculum Director, Dana M. Wheeler, explains, “The Goose Goose Duck Challenge is perfect for caretakers that want to empower their children but aren’t sure where or how to start. The challenge is designed to give adults the information and materials they need to teach and bond with their children in a fun, gentle way.”
The challenge takes the form of an edX style online course with the initial steps of teaching parents how to effectively teach Black history to young children at home. The presentation will be based on the easy-to-use tips outlined in the accompanying article.
In the next section, parents and little ones are introduced to an 11 - activity lesson plan based on the Goose Goose Duck's Gwendolyn Brooks activity pack. The lesson plan starts with a free age-appropriate animation. The vibrant edutaining video is typical of GGD’s videos which show a retelling of Black history through the mediums of nursery rhymes, songs, and a story. Children will engage in parent-led activities developing the characteristics and skills that made the Pulitzer Prize winner great.
Children will learn through doing that people who look like them achieve greatness and they can too.
When asked what the takeaway from the challenge should be, Dorsey stated, "I want parents to be mindful of how Black history is presented and absorbed by children in their most formative years. We shouldn't have to shy away from our history out of fear of stealing our children's joy. By waiting until later years, we give the impression that our accomplishments are lesser, or worse, did not exist at all. With the 30 Day Challenge, parents and loved ones will have the tools to meet their children where they are academically and emotionally."
The No More Trauma Black History Challenge is an evergreen self-paced course. The challenge can be completed in approximately 30 days based on the parent's schedule. Each section will have assignments that need to be completed to move on to the next level, ultimately culminating in one final big project. The challenge is specifically crafted for pre-k to second graders but can positively bolster Black history awareness for older children. Most importantly, it gives parents the power to bond with their children while giving them a positive head start in the realm of self-love and taking the history of melanated people beyond a single month.
